*Life has thrown Latoya Jackson for quite a wallop.
So like any other reasonable C-lister riddled with personal issues, the 50-something year old singer/songwriter has decided to package the drama and turn it into a reality show.
“Life with La Toya,” which debuted Saturday night at 10:30pm on OWN, is the end result of Ms. Jackson’s turbulent past, which includes countless career setbacks, an abusive marriage, very public fallouts with friends and love ones, as well as the loss of her brother, deceased pop icon Michael Jackson who succumbed to an overdose in 2009.
But as the old saying goes, “time heals all wounds,” and now La Toya is ready to pick up the pieces and carry on. Over a span of ten episodes, viewers will have an inside look into her day-to-day affairs, trials and triumphs. The cameras continue to roll even as she makes the plunge back into the dating scene. In reference to the show, La Toya tells ESSENCE she has nothing to hide.
“I truly believe it’s never too late to start over in your life,” she expressed during an interview. “But it’s up to us if we don’t like what happened. No matter what we go through. I was very abused by my ex-manager who married me without my permission. A lot of people say, ‘But you’re La Toya Jackson. You could have gotten away.’ I couldn’t. I was living in fear. I was afraid. He promised that if I didn’t do what he said that he would kill me, he would kill my brother and I believed him. I knew that one day I would eventually try to get away and escape and I did. I want everyone out there who has been abused to know it’s never too late to start over.”
The conversation got much lighter after La Toya was asked to describe her preferences in a potential mate. Above all, she claims she just wants an honest, sincere guy who loves his mother. “That’s very important to me because that tells me who you are,” said Jackson. “And of course, [I want] a sense of humor.”
